Local television news has been notoriously unkind to its own history. Few early
newscasts were recorded on kinescope and early news film was recycled for the
silver.
Cost-conscious local stations recorded over old videotapes and then
discarded news libraries when storage became too expensive. Many historic
programs exist only in the private collections of broadcasters who worked in
the industry over the years, unseen as the tape stock continues to deteriorate.
Strangers in the Living Room wants to provide scholars and interested
viewers with a window on the past and we need your help.
